Finance Committee

The finance committee directs the financial affairs of Second Congregational Church by working closely with the various committees.  Each year committee members from all committees determine the direction and activities that our church wishes to under take.  The finance committee then guides us into making fiscally sound decisions as to how we might achieve those aims within a balanced budget.

Flower Committee
The flowers on the altar each service and throughout the sanctuary for special seasons like Christmas and Easter are provided through donations from the members of our congregation.  Those interested in donating flowers begin the process by calling the church office and selecting a date.  Committee members work with individuals and families if they have a particular type or color of flowers that should be included in the arrangement.  After the service, donors may take the flowers home or ask that they be taken to a shut-in or to one of the local assisted living centers in our area.

About CE
Updated: 22 Jan 2010
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
As written in the bylaws for the Second Congregational Church, “The Christian Education Committee shall be responsible for the general Christian Education program of the Church, especially in the (Elementary) Church School and Youth programs.” The Christian Education (CE) Committee contains nine members who serve for a period of three years each. The CE Committee works closely with, and provides direct support to, two Church staff members, the Christian Education Director and the Middle School Director.
The Christian Education program at Second Congregational Church has three groups: Elementary Program (preK – grade 5) led by Lisa Cooper; Middle School Youth Group (grades 6- 8) led by Elizabeth Lass and Judy Ritts; and High School Confirmation and ASP activities. Nursery Child Care with Diane Zona provides a safe, clean and nurturing environment for the youngest members and visitors of our church.
The Elementary Program uses crafts, video, songs, books, games, art, and cooking to educate. The program includes Old Testament and New Testament stories with the emphasis on helping children understand the history of the bible and learn how to integrate Jesus’ philosophy of life into their own through leadership, sharing, and service. Through activities, the students support various charities such as the Cohasset Food Pantry, Cradles and Crayons, Rosie’s Place, Lakota Indians and Rwandan children.
The Middle School Youth Group offers the young people in our congregation regular Sunday morning meetings and ambitious outreach projects. Our Sunday morning meetings are an opportunity to begin each week with a reminder of God's love. Our projects give a concrete way to make a difference in the world.
     Specific grade programs include:
* Communion: Second graders learn about communion in a special session with Rev. Ritts held each April. Subsequently, they begin taking communion on Communion Sundays, the first Sunday each month.
*  Bible Gift: Third graders receive their own bible each June on Children’s Sunday.
* Acolyte Training: Fourth grade children begin to participate in church service by serving as acolytes on Sunday morning.
* Confirmation: Every other year, ninth and tenth grade children work toward confirmation which involves some service time and thoughtful discussion with Rev. Ritts over several meetings. It culminates in joining the church on Communion Sunday in May for the Confirmands.

Parent participation and dedicated staff makes the CE program successful. We registered over 50 families on Rally Sunday with a combined turnout of 80 students. Average Sunday participation is 55 students: 45 children for the elementary program and 10 for the Middle School.

Caring & Sharing
Updated: 04 Dec 2009
CARING AND SHARING COMMITTEE

The Caring & Sharing Committee is a subgroup of the Board of Deacons. There will be a rotating schedule of members, each taking responsibility for a month at a time. During the month, the member in charge will send cards or hand written notes to those celebrating significant birthdays or anniversaries, sympathy notes/cards acknowledging deaths; wishes for recovery from illness or hospitalization; holiday cards at Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving to those who must stay at home, or are in hospitals, convalescent or retirement facilities; and an acknowledgement of other significant events of members and friends of the church. There will be a core group of members with oversight responsibilities plus a network of congregants who will be asked to perform certain tasks. There is no formal list of names other than the core C&S team. All members of the congregation are considered to be members of the C&S team and may be called upon as needed to provide care.

Each week the member in charge will contact the church office to obtain names of those who might fall into one of the above categories. That member should also be attuned to the joys and concerns express during the weekly services and in church publications. Annually a list of the significant birthdays and anniversaries will be printed by the church administrator.

Caring & Sharing will also assist in providing deliberate care in a timely manner to members and friends who need help in coping with illness, injury death or other personal or family needs. This could include communications, visitations, transportation and meals. As a situation arises, the month;y member in charge will assist in finding people who would help with any of these needs. The church data base should be regularly updated with volunteers willing to help. A listing will be made available as the need arises.

To volunteer to help with this committee or use the services it provides, please contact the church office. 781-383-0345
